There will be 18 table settings ranging from homemade dishware to vintage collectables. The table designers have personalized their settings to fit their interpretation of the “creative” theme. One setting is a tribute to a unique pet and another is inspired by Jimmy Buffett. New this year we will be asking you to pick the favorite design for the People’s Choice Award. Attendees will vote for their favorite Tablescapes once they have had the chance to examine all entries. When the votes are tallied we will announce the winner next week here in the Art Forms Column.
Since Tablescapes is taking place on Flag Day this year, we are honoring the holiday by decorating our studio space in red, white and blue. This is also where we will host refreshments on Sunday for our guests. Tickets are $10 per person and are available at Yankton Area Arts, Hy Vee, Rexall Drug and Pied Piper Flower Shop. Come join us on June 14 and enjoy the beautiful table settings and some wonderful refreshments.
Meanwhile, next Tuesday will be our third installment of the Yankton Area Band Concert in our summer series. We are pleased to welcome back Chuck Varilek as the guest conductor on June 16. Chuck was a member of the Yankton Area Summer Band from its start. He performed regularly with the group until moving to Colorado and enjoys joining the band whenever he returns to the area.
Chuck Varilek graduated from Tyndall High School, attended the University of South Dakota at Springfield for two years and graduated from USD in Vermillion with a degree in Music Education in 1978. Over the next 11 years he taught in Irene, Scotland and Vermillion before moving to Colorado in 1989. Varilek has been the Director of Bands at Estes Park High School for 20 years. During this time, the band has become recognized as one of the top small-school band programs in Colorado, earning numerous awards in marching band, jazz band and concert band. It has also reached the State Finals 13 straight years and has won two State Championships.
The Yankton Area Band Concert Rehearsal begins at 6:30 p.m. for any volunteer musicians interested in playing and the concert begins promptly at 8 p.m. For late changes due to weather, listen to the radio stations – WNAX, 570 AM; KYNT, 1450 AM or KVHT, 106.3 FM.
