‘Crimson Door’ Showcases G.A.R. Gallery
The Crimson Door committee has been working for months to coordinate the annual gift gallery, and their hard work is evident in the beautiful artwork displayed throughout the gallery this month. For a complete listing of all the Crimson Door Artists, please visit our website at www.YanktonAreaArts.org.

‘Twas the end of November and all through the town
the people were hustling, no time to slow down
When trying to nestle all snug in their beds
visions of a Crimson Door danced in their heads.
———
And rightly so! The annual Yankton Area Arts Holiday Show has been buzzing with excitement since we opened our “Crimson Door” Dec 2. The holiday shoppers who are looking for that “unique” gift for someone “special” or that “special” gift for someone “unique” are finding out we at the Crimson Door can meet that challenge.
Once again during the month of December, the G.A.R. Art Gallery at 508 Douglas has been mystically transformed. The never-ending expanse of wall that normally accentuates the artwork of area artists has become the backdrop to display everything from handmade children’s sweaters to scarves to natural woodland sconces. More handmade items gracefully adorn the perimeter of the room by utilizing the abundant amount of original, wooden, floor space. The antique showcase greets the holiday shoppers as it gracefully displays the wide assortment of local artisans’ jewelry. The rest of the gallery’s antique furniture provides unique displays for rustic wooden clocks, candles, turned wooden bowls, pens and glasswork. The stately windows have become frameworks for pieces of art such as blown glass ornaments, sun catchers, and marble spinners that catch the light and cast an array of color throughout the day. Center stage, you will find the large, lighted Christmas tree that looks delightfully decorated, with some handmade ornaments intermingled that are also for sale. Hats and mittens and journals and jewelry, there is something for everyone!
This first week, the holiday shoppers visiting the Crimson Door have been mesmerized by the gallery’s new boutique look and the large variety of gift items. The “First Friday” crowd was pleased to see the gallery take on new life as a retail setting with the warmth that the historic G.A.R. Hall has to offer. Out-of-town guests were impressed with the history of the gallery as they took the time to visit with YAA board members and volunteers.
This is an opportunity for our stately lady to truly shine. Those whom have graced her halls before would be very proud not only of the magnificent restoration but of the numerous ways we utilize such an historic treasure. As I shared with one visitor, this past month the gallery was staged as a romantic setting for a wedding proposal. The cozy table for two, bottle of champagne, elegant stemware and red roses all rested atop a crisp, white, linen tablecloth and took center stage in the dimly lit hall. The young gentleman had cleverly concealed the engagement ring amongst the jewelry displayed in our showcase. Upon his special lady’s arrival and viewing of the art, he asked, she answered and the date is set!
We truly aim to please, so if I have sparked your interest, please stop by the gallery, not only to the Crimson Door show that is now going on through the month of December, but anytime for a visit. You will soon come to understand why we, and many before us, are so proud of this beautifully restored masterpiece that sits tucked away in the heart of our historic city.
Before you leave the gallery this holiday season, check out our huge Santa as he sheds light on your path, offers a smile and a holiday greetings to all!

Get Ready For The Annual Yankton Tour Of Homes
These past months, Carla and Dawn Stoner have been working hard to coordinate all the details of this annual fundraiser. This event would not be possible without Yankton community members opening their homes for holidays, and a big thank you goes out to each of them!

Whether we are ready or not, the holidays will soon be upon us! In an effort to get you “in the mood,” Yankton Area Arts would like to invite you to its annual Tour of Homes.
This year, we have four homes and one historical hotel. As usual, the event is scheduled for the first Sunday in December. So, on Dec. 5, you can enjoy the tour from 1-4 p.m. and from 1-5 p.m., we welcome you to join us at G.A.R. Hall for free dessert and coffee. In addition, your ticket will get you 10 percent off any purchases you make at The Crimson Door Holiday Gift Gallery, our annual holiday store, on the first floor of G.A.R Hall.
Tickets for this wonderful event can be purchased at Hy-Vee, Rexall Drugstore, Pied Piper Flower Shop, G.A.R. Hall (1-5 p.m. weekdays and 1-3 p.m. Saturdays) and from any board member. The ticket price has remained the same at $20.
This year, all properties on the tour have one thing in common: They have been renovated. What’s better than making a house your own? These properties are sure to be full of ideas for your own home.
We are proud, and grateful to the owners, to offer a tour of, “these old homes — only better”:
• River Rose Hotel (Cena and Curt Bernard): This is a restored, 100-year-old, former bank building. It is a six-suite hotel that has been renovated but has maintained its history with beautiful old columns, floors, fireplaces and tin ceilings. Which suite will you get to tour: the Danforth with its old world style, the McVay with its empire influence or will it be the Heaton, Fantles, Edmund or WH Resort suites? You will just have to join us!
• Connie Stenson and Jeff Hines: This is a beautiful, 1960s Betty Crocker home with a scenic, one-of-a-kind overlook of the river. This home has had many updates inside and out — by tearing down walls, for an open floor plan, to extensive landscaping.
• Terry and Cheryl Winter: This 100-year-old home has been restored to its original glory — inside and out. Not only is the tin ceiling back in place but it also has tile from the old County Courthouse. The home is simply splendid!
• Cheryl Koch and Mike Hacecky: This is a new home that has been completely redecorated by the talented, interior designer, Cheryl Koch. As you walk through this home, pay particular attention to the window and wall treatments.
• Gene and Aggie Heine: This 2004 home has a splendid view of the 16th hole on the Hillcrest Golf Course. The floor plan of this home has been opened up and many adjustments have been made to make it more wheel chair accessible. See how they made their screened in porch a part of the main living area.
Yankton Area Arts is a non-profit organization. We are able to provide events from the Summer Band concerts to First Friday art nights, through our fund raising events (like Tour of Homes) and through the support of our membership. Through the end of November, if you renew or purchase a family membership, your name will be included in the weekly drawing for a free ticket to the Tour of Homes event. Your membership is important to us. It helps Yankton Area Arts to continue being a fundamental and integral part of the community.
Twelve days and 42 days. What’s that? The number of days until Thanksgiving and Christmas! What could be a better way to enjoy the spirit of the season by spending a few hours with family and friends — touring the homes, enjoying holiday desserts and shopping at the gallery? We look forward to seeing you on Dec. 5!

Earth, Wind, Fire & Water Exhibit
| October 22, 2010 | to | November 24, 2010 |
The Connecting Artists organization provides visual fine artists, from beginners to professional, with opportunities for education, display, fellowship and networking. Their sixth annual exhibit at the G.A.R. Hall Gallery titled “Earth, Wind, Fire and Water” will run from Oct. 22 through Nov. 24. This edition will feature work by more than 20 members of the group and will be a fantastic opportunity to enjoy some of the most creative art produced in our community. Some of the artists will be at the gallery during our next First Friday event at 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, presenting a perfect opportunity to learn more about the group and meet the artists in person.
Fall’s In The Air, But Winter Plans Are Already Brewing
As the seasons begin morphing into winter, we have started preparing for the upcoming holiday season at the G.A.R. Hall Art Gallery. Our committees are hard at work planning this year’s activities along with our remaining exhibits for 2010.
This week is your last chance to visit the gallery and see the wonderful “Szabo Family Art from the Rosebud” exhibit, which featured three generations of South Dakota artistry. The collection includes colorful batik prints and beautiful handcrafted silver jewelry. I have enjoyed being surrounded by these great cultural works and have found the stories of the artists themselves to be fascinating. You’ll want to make sure and stop in to the gallery and take it all in before the show closes on Wednesday.
Our next gallery show will host a collection of artwork from our local artist affiliation, the Connecting Artists.
I am also very much looking forward to our final exhibit of the year, which is “The Crimson Door” Holiday Show. Yankton Area Arts will host the fifth annual holiday boutique at the gallery starting the first weekend in December. During the show, the gallery hosts regional artists and features their one-of-a-kind original artwork priced at $100 or less. Holiday shoppers enjoy browsing in the gallery’s charming atmosphere where they can look for the perfect gift. The Crimson Door show is sure to have the perfect holiday gifts for all ages on your list.
This year, we have had terrific interest in the show and are thrilled to have several new artists participate. As a matter of fact, several have brought their work to the gallery early and we are able to make it available now for early shoppers — and remember all Yankton Area Arts members receive 10 percent off on their purchases all year long. More details and artist information will be posted on our website at www.YanktonAreaArts.org in the coming weeks, so be sure to check there for a preview!
As you can see, there’s still lots of art left to enjoy yet this year. But as we began the preparations, I realized there might be one thing missing — you! So be sure to stop down at the gallery for a visit; you’ll be glad you did.

Yankton’s ‘First Friday’ Series On The Grow!
First Fridays started as a partnership between several local galleries during the summer in order to promote a recurring evening of art. Since then, we’ve gotten a tremendous amount of encouragement from the community, which is great, as it really is a grass roots effort. During the past few months we have even had some downtown businesses join in to stay open late and we encourage others to join in!
This month, we have a terrific variety of activities taking place and even a few new stops added to tonight’s list. The art galleries will be open from 5-7 p.m. tonight (Friday) and each location will have artists on site to visit about their work. All the exhibits are open to the public and free of charge. The Pantry and LilyCrest have some seasonal fun at their stops, Rexall Drug will be open until 6 p.m. and Ben’s Brewing Company is joining in by offering specials in honor of First Friday. We love seeing the activities grow!
Many of you may have noticed that the Art House Gallery is no longer open for regularly scheduled hours. Gallery owner Jake Kidney is currently opening the gallery by appointment only, with the exception of First Fridays. Jake graduated from the University of South Dakota with a degree in painting and photography and recently won two Promise to Purchase Awards and Honorable Mention at the 2010 Mighty Mo Photo Show.
This evening, Jake will be offering walk-in portraits at the Art House Gallery from 5-7 p.m. The cost will be $10 and includes an 8X10 print and your choice of a set of mini-wallets or wallets. The gallery will be set with a variety of different backgrounds and you can have as many people in the picture as you can fit. Pets are allowed, costumes encouraged, and people that just want to have a fun time are a must! This is definitely a fun addition!
Down the street at OneTen Art Gallery, the works of Gerald Cournoyer and Perry Little will be featured. Cournoyer describes his work as “a more abstract style, incorporating the use of geometric beadwork and quillwork forms.” This evening, he will present several new pieces. Little will be displaying beaded dream catchers as well as a handcrafted woman’s breastplate. Both artists will be at OneTen and available to visit with guest about their artwork.
The next stop is just couple of blocks up Douglas Avenue at the Studio Art Center. There you will be able to view the current “Nature and Wildlife” show and visit with art instructor Lita Stucky. The Studio Art Center offers a range of fine art classes and craft offerings; and has recently added Abstract and Impressionistic Painting and Portraits to the schedule. If you are interested in classes, this would be a great opportunity to view work produced by students.
The fourth gallery on tonight’s agenda is our own G.A.R. Hall Art Gallery, home of Yankton Area Arts. This evening, we will be hosting the Szabo family at the gallery. This wonderful family spans three generations of gifted artists and they will be on hand to visit about their work. Linda Szabo has a beautiful set of original handmade batik prints on display. Paul and Brian Szabo have filled our display case with beautiful handcrafted silver jewelry. The youngest family member, Ramsey Tucker, is only 6 years old, but he has several of his rings within the show. It is definitely worth visiting just to see his impressive work.
For those of you who have yet to buy your Yankton Area Concert Association Season Membership, the season starts this weekend. Membership Chair Betts Pulkrabek will be in house tonight to help community members purchase their tickets. Please make sure to see Betts when you come in!
While you are out getting your monthly First Friday art fix, don’t forget to support our local businesses that are participating, as well. We’ve got five on board this month and they are all conveniently located on Third Street. In addition to her wonderful collection of photographic prints and unique gifts, Cathy at LilyCrest has decorated for Halloween and it is a must-see! Once again, Dick at the Pantry will be preparing some special treats for visitors tonight, and you can check out the new items he’s brought in for the fall. Meanwhile, Rexall Drug is also open tonight until 6 p.m. And finally, don’t forget to stop at Ben’s Brewing and ask for the First Friday wine special Ben is running from 2-8 p.m. It’s a great final destination, where you can enjoy a glass of wine and chat about all your wonderful stops from the evening.
As always, I would like to encourage everyone to take some time out and experience the arts, and I look forward to seeing some new faces tonight. I have posted a map for tonight at www.YanktonAreaArts.org, so please show your support for this event by visiting the participating galleries and businesses. I’ll see you out on the town!
