Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute – June 20 – July 2, 2010

The 20th annual Oscar Howe Native American Summer Art Institute is slated to begin on Sunday, June 20, 2010 on the campus of The University of South Dakota. The Institute will run for two weeks, concluding on Friday, July 2, and will be housed primarily in the Warren M. Lee Center for Fine Arts.

The Institute is named in honor of noted American Indian artist and former professor of art at USD, Oscar Howe. Howe was one of the most influential American Indian artists of the 20th Century, earning numerous awards and honors over a 40-year career, including being named the first recipient of the South Dakota Governor’s Award for Creative Achievement in 1973. Though he passed away in 1983, his influence on The University of South Dakota remains evident. Howe established the Institute in 1961 and oversaw the program through 1972. Following a hiatus, the program was reinstituted in 1991.

This year’s Institute will consist of 10-20 high school juniors and seniors, with all participants attending on fully funded scholarships. Registration forms can be found on the USD Website. Application deadline is April 9, 2010.

Yankton Area Arts would like to encourage area students to apply for OHSAI. We are pleased to announce that Yankton Area Arts will be funding a scholarship for 2010 Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute.
